Despite warnings from local authorities, the group continued to meet privately and attract even more followers. In the Lomersheimer declaration, written in , these religious Separatists presented their statement of faith, based on Christian principles, to the Wurttemberg legislature. The group supported the belief that baptism was not necessary until children could decide for themselves whether they wanted to become a Christian. They also believed that confirmation for youth was not necessary and communion and confession would only be held a few times a year.

Most were made with compressed wood fibers or pulp. Some were smooth-surfaced, some manufactured with a wood grain texture and some were striated to look like boards. The wall boards were simply nailed to studs and joists in unfinished work or nailed over previously finished surfaces. The joints were typically covered with thin wood batten strips and the assembly was then painted. There were many types and several manufacturers, but the most well known product today is Beaver Board.

Over a century after this product was first developed, most folks refer to all of these older fiber board products as Beaver Board. Beaver Board just had the best advertising. Lewis, a paper product maker, glued layers of mat board used for picture framing to make boards for lining his attic. This took place in Beaver Falls, NY. In , 11 Australian commandos , all white, disguised themselves as Malay fishermen by dyeing their skin brown and boarding a fishing boat. They sailed through 2, miles of Japanese-controlled ocean from Australia to Singapore. At one point they even traveled right alongside a Japanese warship without them noticing anything strange which was good, because none of the commandos could speak Malay. They then took canoes right into Singapore Harbor, where they blew up seven Japanese ships before escaping.

So racism is OK as long as you have plenty of bombs and canoes. Somehow, this totally worked, and she snagged the plans to a fort and the identities of some Confederate spies before ” escaping ” back to Union lines.

Download the PDF Clay tiles are one of the most distinctive and decorative historic roofing materials because of their great variety of shapes, colors, profiles, patterns, and textures. Traditionally, clay tiles were formed by hand, and later by machine extrusion of natural clay, textured or glazed with color, and fired in high-temperature kilns. The unique visual qualities of a clay tile roof often make it a prominent feature in defining the overall character of a historic building.

The significance and inherently fragile nature of historic tile roofs dictate that special care and precaution be taken to preserve and repair them. Clay tile was a popular roofing material for residential structures during the Romanesque Revival period. Clay tile has one of the longest life expectancies among historic roofing materials—generally about years, and often several hundred.

Yet, a regularly scheduled maintenance program is necessary to prolong the life of any roofing system. A complete internal and external inspection of the roof structure and the roof covering is recommended to determine condition, potential causes of failure, or source of leaks, and will help in developing a program for the preservation and repair of the tile roof. Before initiating any repair work on historic clay tile roofs, it is important to identify those qualities important in contributing to the historic significance and character of the building.

This Brief will review the history of clay roofing tiles and will include a description of the many types and shapes of historic tiles, as well as their different methods of attachment. It will conclude with general guidance for the historic property owner or building manager on how to plan and carry out a project involving the repair and selected replacement of historic clay roofing tiles.

Etymology[ edit ] The word “carpenter” is the English rendering of the Old French word carpentier later, charpentier which is derived from the Latin carpentrius [artifex], ” maker of a carriage. An easy way to envisage this is that first fix work is all that is done before plastering takes place. Second fix is done after plastering takes place. Second fix work, the construction of items such as skirting boards, architraves, and doors also comes under carpentry.

The Carthage Historic District contains the largest and most intact concentration of buildings reflecting the growth and development of the town of Carthage, North Carolina, from the second quarter of the nineteenth century to the beginning of World War II.

Carthage, the county seat of Moore County in the state’s Sandhills region, dates its origins to although few, if any, buildings currently within the town’s limits survive from that early period. While several houses apparently contain elements dating from the first or second quarter of the nineteenth century, the earliest datable buildings are from the early s, when the Fayetteville and Western Plank Road was completed through Carthage.

In addition to the houses of many citizens who figured prominently in the history of Carthage in the second half of the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth, the Carthage Historic District includes a cemetery with burials dating to the early s, the largest and oldest surviving church building in town, which is adjacent to the cemetery, and a late Depression-era community building. It also contains both vernacular and sophisticated examples of many of the architectural styles prevalent during that long period.

The substantial size and relative architectural sophistication of some of the buildings reflect the town’s comparative prosperity which derived from its role as the county seat, as a market town for the surrounding plantations and farms, and as the location of the county’s principal manufacturing enterprise during much of the period of significance. This was the Tyson and Kelly later Tyson and Jones Buggy Company, established in the mid s, which employed skilled workers such as blacksmiths, wheelwrights, trimmers, upholsterers, and painters.

Five years later, a county seat was established on the Killett’s Creek property of Richardson Fagin and called Faginsville also spelled Fagansville, Fagensville. A small, crude log building was erected for use as the courthouse. A more desirable location was sought, and a point on a ridge running east to west across the county, and reputed to be the highest point in the county, was eventually selected. This ridge divided the county into two sections:
